Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions

Help the STC Twin Cities Community remain a vital organizaion! There are a variety of opportunities and time commitments available.

 

Volunteer position available Number of volunteers required Job description Time required
Academic Liaison Chairperson plus 2-3 volunteers Promote the technical communication profession and the mission of STC to area colleges and universities. Publicize chapter events, job opportunities, and scholarships available to students.
Oversee the scholarship competition. The liaisons would coordinate an STC day at an area technical college, community college, college, or university.
2-3 hours per month
Internships coordinator 1 volunteer Work with Academic Liaison, Webmaster, and Employment Manager to coordinate incoming and outgoing internship opportunities and manage STC TC Internship web pages. Publicize the Internship Program through e-mails, newsletter articles, networking with instructors/students, networking with STC members as well s others so that both students and professionals are aware of this service. 2-3 hours per month
Arrangements Committee Manager plus 4 or more volunteers Send out monthly email reminders for meeting and special events
Coordinate space, food, A/V requirements for meetings and special events
Process registrations from website and voicemail
Work at registration desk at monthly meetings
Manager: 5 hours per month

Other: 2 hours per month
Registration Assistants 2-3 per meeting Assist with Chapter meeting registration 2 hours per meeting
Employment Committee member 1 Work with Employment Manager and Webmaster to update job exchange page on website with new job postings, delete requests, and aged postings. Requires knowledge of Microsoft FrontPage. 1 hour per week
Competition committee managers Manager plus 3 volunteers:
-Publications Manager
-Online Manager
-Art Manager
Work with the Competition Manager to train competition judges, distribute entries, coordinate judging, report results, contact winners. 5-10 hours per month, October through January
Competition Judges 24-30 Evaluate competition entries (3-5 per judge) as a team of 3 judges. Participate in consensus judging to determine award levels, Best-in-Show. October through December
2.5 hours orientation
2 hours per entry
2 hours consensus judging
Nominations committee 3-5 Solicit candidates to run for elected positions for the upcoming year.
Oversee the election
December through March

Program committee Manager plus 2-3 volunteers Work with Program Manager to develop and manage programs for nine monthly meetings. Determine speakers, topics of interest, special events and coordinate speaker requirements with the Arrangements Manager 2-3 hours per meeting
Public relations committee Manager plus 1-2 volunteers Work with Public Relations Manager to publicize events to our members and affiliate organizations in the Twin Cities.
Work with 1st Vice President, Newsletter editor, special events coordinator to determine marketing and publicity requirements each month. Print flyers for distribution at meetings.
Work with Arrangement Manager to email information to members, work with Webmaster to publicize events on the website.
Prepare and submit entry for public relations competition in February.
Develop publicity for special and non-STC events sponsored by affiliate organizations.
2-3 hours per month

February: 10 hours to prepare and mail entry to competition
Special Event Coordinator 1-2 Select program topics and recruit speakers for Saturday events. Work with affiliate organizations for any co-sponsored event. Work with Arrangements Manager for space, food, A/V requirements for the event. 1-2 events per year:  15-20 hours per event
