How much does it cost to join?Members pay annual dues to the Society for Technical Communication. The amount due depends on your status as a student or professional. For details regarding prorated credits and rules for student membership, contact the STC membership department. Prorated Dues for New MembersNew members who joined STC in 2005 receive prorated credit on their 2006 renewal invoice. The amount of credit you receive is based on 2005 dues and the month you joined, as shown in the table below.
For example, new members who joined STC in September 2005 at the Classic rate paid $145 for a membership that extends until December 31, 2005. These members will each receive a 60% credit ($87) towards 2006 dues. Credits will appear on new members' renewal invoices. STC Encourages International Growth Through New Dues StructureIn an effort to strengthen STC's appeal to technical communicators around the world, the Society board of directors has approved a localized dues structure that lowers dues for members who live in countries with emerging and developing markets for technical communication. The new structure, which goes into effect for 2006, institutes three tiers of dues for developing, emerging, and mature markets. STC members' opinions were surveyed in early October 2005. In a letter to members posted to the STC Web site, Society president Suzanna Laurent stated, "Localized dues will enable technical communicators in developing and emerging markets to pay dues that more closely reflect their local economies and related costs of living. . . . The benefits of localized dues are enormous. In addition to bringing fellow professionals from developing and emerging markets into the Society and expanding our community, we would increase our influence and capacity to advance the interests of all our members." A chart of the countries in each of the three tiers and their corresponding dues accompanies Suzanna Laurent's full text letter. |
