February 2018 Meeting with John Hedtke
Seeding the Clouds
Even in the best of times, it can be a challenge to find work. Technical communicators are occasionally at an added disadvantage of having to sell the value of our profession as well as ourselves as candidates, so anything we can do to give ourselves an edge is helpful.
This presentation by international award-winning author John Hedtke discussed two dozen ways to find work you probably haven’t even considered. There were tips on common ideas such as updating your resume and creating a portfolio, but the presentation also discussed ways in which you might create work for yourself and open up new work venues.
Let us not kid ourselves: we are all of is in this business to Make Money. Oh, sure, we like what we do, we try to be good at what we do, and there’s no heavy lifting involved, but at the end of the day, if they didn’t pay us, we’d do something else for somebody else who did pay us.
John has served in several roles at STC including Nominating Committee member and regional Director/Sponsor. John was the last Region 7 Director on the Society for Technical Communication’s Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the Society.
