STC and STC-TC History

Since the mid-1900s, we have provided valuable resources and educational opportunities. Beginning in 1953, two organizations were founded on the East Coast: the Society of Technical Writers and the Association of Technical Writers and Editors. Both organizations were dedicated to improving the practice of technical communication. The Twin Cities Chapter was formed on June 1, 1956, as part of the Association of Technical Writers and Editors.

In 1957, the two organizations merged to become the Society of Technical Writers and Editors (STWE). Then, in 1960, STWE merged with another organization, this time from the West Coast: The Technical Publishing Society. This union formed the Society of Technical Writers and Publishers. Finally, in 1971, the organization's name changed to the Society for Technical Communication (STC).

In 2005, the Twin Cities Chapter became the Twin Cities Community as the Society began its transformation to more closely reflect its changing membership. With the World Wide Web, we are no longer merely geographical. With virtual communities, podcasts, Websites, and email, we can join communities of interest.
